Broadband speed checker - test your true speed

This broadband speed test will test your ADSL bandwidth and find your connection's true download and upload speed.

Start the broadband speed test by clicking the relevant button in the centre of the page - this will normally be 'Home User' unless you're in an office block. The broadband speed check starts by first downloading a file and measuring how long it takes. After the download is finished the broadband speed test uploads a file and - unsurprisingly - measures your upload speed and reports the results in Mbps (Megabits per second).

Tips:

To obtain the most accurate broadband speed test results you should ensure that there's no other applications running on your PC that may be consuming bandwidth - e.g. virus guard updates, file download managers etc.

The results of the broadband speed test are given in Kbps (Kilobits per second) - 1000 Kbps is approximately 1Mb/s (1 Megabit per second).

What about mobile broadband speeds?

When mobile companies talk about 3.6 or 7.2 Mbps mobile broadband speeds they are referring to theoretical maximum speeds, not necessarily speeds you can actually experience. HSDPA Networks have a theoretical maximum speed of 3.6 Mbps. But your distance from a mobile mast, trees and other buildings between you and the mast, as well the number of users can all influence the speed you experience. Most people on HSDPA Networks can expect a speed ranging from 1Mbps to 1.5Mbps, allowing you to download a 3-4 minute music track in 30 seconds or less.

Carefully check the facts about mobile broadband speed claims. Are the top speeds offered reserved for a handful of locations near a mobile mast? Or can you connect at high speed right across the UK?
